Variables considered and adjusted in the multivariate analysis were: underlying medical conditions [congestive heart failure within 30 days prior to surgery, severe COPD, acute renal failure (pre-operative), bleeding disorders, cancer, ascites within 30 days prior to surgery], preoperative treatments (dialysis, ventilation, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and ASA classification.
