TABLE 5.

Proportion of respondents reporting concerning levels on the SHS, CES-D10, WLI, and ITL scales at various thresholds on the EE metrics.

SHS score <5 (%) CES-D10 score ≥10 (%) WLI score >2 (%) ITL score ≥50 (%)
EE9item:
No EE 6.8 0.0 11.4 6.6
Mild EE 19.0 4.2 36.2 18.4
Moderate EE 48.7 28.2 58.4 55.0
Severe EE 68.6 70.3 84.1 82.1

Moderate EE 42.9 17.4 52.4 47.0
Severe EE 60.0 52.7 78.6 70.6
EE1item5pt:
No EE 9.5 1.9 24.0 12.3
Mild EE 23.8 4.5 38.0 14.4
Moderate EE 38.7 16.0 46.4 43.2
Severe EE 45.9 30.9 62.9 53.9
EE1item7pt:
≥1 time/week 53.1 43.8 74.6 61.9

The cutoffs for concerning levels are SHS (<5) (Lyubomirsky and Lepper, 1999), CES-D10 (≥10) (Björgvinsson et al., 2013), WLI (>2) (Sexton et al., 2017; Schwartz et al., 2019), and ITL (≥50). For five-point agree-disagree metrics (EE9item, EE5item, EE1item5pt) scores of 0 = no EE, 0.01–49.9 = mild EE, 50–74.9 = moderate EE, and ≥75 = severe. For the EE1item7pt metric, a cutoff of “once a week or more” is often used to indicate a concerning level (West et al., 2009; Brady et al., 2020). EE9item, 9-item emotional exhaustion metric; EE5item, 5-item emotional exhaustion metric; EE1item5pt, single item emotional exhaustion metric using five-point agree-disagree scale; EE1item7pt, single item emotional exhaustion metric using 7-point frequency response scale; CES-D10, center for epidemiological studies depression scale 10-item; SHS, subjective happiness scale; WLI, work-life integration; ITL, intention to leave current position.
