Schematic of the effects of how Wolbachia interferes with cholesterol metabolism to suppress Zika virus in C6/36 cells (1). Wolbachia uses the same substrates as the mosquito MVA pathway, leading to cholesterol depletion, and prevents ZikV upregulation of MVA genes. Light gray arrows indicate decreased expression in Wolbachia-infected cells (2). Wolbachia infection prevents ZikV from upregulating cholesterol esterase to use stored cholesterol in lipid droplets by decreasing LD abundance.
