Bacteria were grown at 30°C in MOPS medium (−NaCl) or in MOPS medium containing 300 mM NaCl (+NaCl). β-Galactosidase activity was assayed at mid-log growth phase. The values are means from three independent cultures and are expressed as nanomoles of products liberated per minute per milligram (dry weight) of bacteria.
