Susceptibility to HOCl of mutant strains with defects in antioxidant pathways. The indicated strains were tested for sensitivity to (A) HOCl or (C) H2O2 in agar plate diffusion assays as described in Fig. 2. The diameter of the zone of growth inhibition surrounding each spot was recorded after incubation for 2 days at 30°C, and then the difference in size compared to the wild-type control cells is shown on the graphs. (B and D) Images of representative halo assays corresponding to strains with significant differences in HOCl sensitivity. The results represent the average of three independent assays, each done in duplicate. The strains used are described in Table 1.
