Schematic representation of how polyphenols might combat glycative stress in the brain.

During hyperglycemia, sugar or its metabolites interact with biomolecules to form toxic AGEs. AGEs contribute to protein aggregation, a characteristic hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases. Polyphenols act as natural antioxidants diminishing the AGEs production and stimulating p62-selective autophagy that speeds up the AGEs clearance. Created with Microsoft PowerPoint.
