^aBALB/c mice were immunized three times with each virus or mock immunized as described in Materials and Methods. At 3 weeks after the third immunization, mice were challenged ocularly with 2 × 10⁵ PFU of HSV-1 strain McKrae/eye. Tears were collected from days 1 to 10 postinfection from 20 eyes/group from two separate experiments, and the amount of virus was determined by plaque assay. Numbers in parentheses (n) indicate the number of eyes used to determine the virus titer/eye.
