2 September 2003	New search has been performed	In this substantive update, Issue 1, 2004, there have been 8 new RCTs included, so that the review now includes 20 RCTs. There was no change to the general search strategy, which now includes MEDLINE search to March 2003. New outcome criteria have been added following review of the outcomes used in the trials from the earlier systematic review. The conclusions of the review have not changed substantially. Surgical treatment has been shown to be superior to conservative treatment or no treatment. The use of new techniques to fix the bone ends following surgery have been shown not to be detrimental.
