SDM during virtual care. Trusting patient‐provider relationships form the foundation for SDM, both in person and virtually, and patients and providers draw upon this relationship to support the SDM process. Whether in person or virtual, providers and patients generally follow the following four steps for SDM: (1) Stating a decision needs to be made, (2) listing options, (3) incorporating patient preferences and answering patient questions, and (4) making a decision. The three skills of communicating, sharing information, and choosing influence the success of SDM during virtual care. Technology and the health care system are external factors that can positively or negatively affect SDM during virtual care.
