Kynurenine metabolism products kynurenic acid and quinolinic acid are identified as neuroprotective or neurotoxic, respectively. Highlighted by the red circle, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis also plays a role in the bi-directional communication between the gut and brain during fasting.
