Medication choices for cats involved in intercat aggression

Medication class Indication
Benzodiazepines: diazepam or oxazepam For victim if very fearful and withdrawn; will render less anxious and more outgoing; good with food treats; disinhibits
Tricyclic antidepressants: amitriptyline, nortriptyline, clomipramine For victim or aggressor if aggression about uncertainty or anxiety associated with social interactions
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors: paroxetine, sertraline, fluvoxamine, fluoxetine For victim if needs to be more confident in interactions (paroxetine or sertraline); for aggressor if aggression is outburst and assertive (fluoxetine)
Partial serotonin agonists (buspirone) Victim, only! Will make more outgoing and may result in cat asserting herself more—relies on resultant social interactions to affect change
