Source: 1996–2017 CPS March supplement data. Standard errors are shown in parentheses. The samples include US- and Mexican-born children ages 17 and below who live in intact families. The 1.5-generation Mexicans are children born in Mexico. Second-generation Mexicans are US-born and have at least one parent born in Mexico. Third-generation Mexicans are US-born, have two US-born parents, and at least one grandparent born in Mexico. Fourth+-generation Mexicans are US-born, have two US-born parents, have no grandparents born in Mexico, and at least one parent who identifies as Mexican on the Hispanic origin question. Fourth+-generation whites have no parents or grandparents who are foreign-born, and themselves and both parents are identified as non-Hispanic on the Hispanic origin question and white only on the race question. Fourth+-generation whites are the reference group. Each column reports estimates from a separate ordinary least squares regression of the form: Hi=βIi+Xiπ+εi, where Hi=1 if child i has poor/fail health, and Ii is a vector including the following dummy variables: 1.5-generation Mexican, 2nd-generation Mexican, 3rd-generation Mexican identified as Mexican, 3rd-generation Mexican not identified as Mexican, 4th+-generation Mexican identified as Mexican, and 4th+-generation Mexican not identified as Mexican. Controls (Xi), where indicated, are as follows. Basic controls include age, age squared, and dummy variables for gender, survey year, division of the country, individual states NY, NJ, IL, FL, TX, NM, AZ, and CA, and urban area. SES controls include controls for mother’s and father’s years of education and employment status. Parental health controls include dummy variables for mother’s and father’s self-reported health status
