Schematic representation depicting the differences in cell type
abundance, phenotype, and immunological function of distinct cell subtypes in
SDp (red) vs. uncomplicated D/DWS (blue), and specific attributes of
virus-harboring cells (VHCs) (yellow). We propose that ineffective memory
responses, accompanied by defective antigen presentation and inflammation
resolution mechanisms, in part mediated by active DENV replication in B cells
and myeloid cells in human blood, prevail in SDp, whereas adequate presentation
of antigens and effective antigen-specific responses characterize D/DWS
patients.
