Acetylene (a), ethylene (b) percentage, and OD600 (c) change with time in liquid culture with D-galactose as substrate and nitrogen gas as the sole N source. Cultures with bacteria are labeled in red, and media without inoculum (control) are labeled in black. The decrease of acetylene and the increase of ethylene indicated active nitrogen fixation during bacterial growth.
