Table 13.

The most common training programs applied in patients with facial palsy.

Type of therapy Characteristics
Neuromuscular biofeedback training Muscle activity is objectively recorded using surface EMG. Used for the treatment of synkinesis. Its effectiveness has been demonstrated in randomized controlled trials
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation Stimulates the development of complex patterns of coordinated muscle actions, the normalization of muscle tone, muscle stretching, and muscle strengthening
Mime therapy Based on mime training for actors, focuses on symmetry of the face at rest and during movement. Effectiveness has been shown
Electrical stimulation No standards have been defined and effectiveness has not been shown
Acupuncture Effectiveness has not yet been shown
