Proposed model of GW9 regulating grain size and weight in rice. The ubiquitination of GW9, GW6a, and WG1 are regulated by GW2. GW6a and WG1 positively regulates grain size by promoting cell proliferation and expansion. Meanwhile, GW9 is a component of the PRC2 complex, which negatively regulates grain size by inhibiting the expression of downstream target genes through H3K27me3 modification. In the presence of GW2, the mutation of GW9 removes the repressive effect of downstream target genes, improved the expression level of cell proliferation and expansion related genes, and thus increasing grain size and weight.
