^aHIV-1 strain IIIb (1.8 × 10⁴ TCID₅₀/ml) was placed on epithelial cells (10⁶/petri dish) with or without inhibitors. After a 1-h incubation, the cells were treated with trypsin to inactivate all extracellular HIV particles. Cells were incubated with fresh medium, and the supernatants were harvested at different time points. Infectious virus in the supernatant was titrated on MT4 cells (see Materials and Methods). All experiments were performed in triplicate. The differences between the infectious titers with and without inhibitors are highly significant for all incubation times (P < 0.001 by the Mann-Whitney U test).
