^aAs described in Materials and Methods, data given represent the means ± the standard deviations for three (except where indicated otherwise) independent transfection-infection experiments. Each transfection precipitate was placed in triplicate wells of a 12-well dish. The average number (varying from 200 to 800 per well in different experiments) of β-galactosidase-positive foci in the wells transfected with Pit2 DNA was assigned a value of 100% for each experiment, and all other values were normalized to this.
