^aMembers of groups of experimental animals comprising 16 mice each were infected by the intravenous route with 5 × 10⁶ PFU of PV1(M). They were treated according to the experimental protocol outlined in the legend to Fig. 2 and observed clinically twice daily, and it was recorded which limb showed initial signs of weakness.
