Participants	Patients 18 years or older undergoing elective cardiac surgery
Interventions	Intervention: heparin intravenous infusion (18U/kg/hr) over the 3 hours prior to commencement of surgery Control: placebo (equivalent infusion of 5% dextrose with no active drug
Outcomes	Primary outcome: evidence of microvascular thrombosis on lung biopsy taken at the end of cardiac surgery Secondary outcome: alveolar dead space
