The lymphocyte, monocyte, platelet counts and haemoglobin levels were taken from the routine FBC in the clinic. The CD3⁺ T cell count was calculated using the CD3⁺ T cell frequencies (determined by flow cytometry) as a proportion of the lymphocytes. The CD4:CD8 ratios were calculated using the frequencies of CD4⁺ and CD8⁺ (single positives) within the CD3⁺ T cell population. Each data set represents n = 16 patients
