Osteomyelitis inhibits tumor angiogenesis by a CEC independent mechanism.a Tumors from infected and uninfected mice were flash frozen in OCT and cut into 4 μm sections for CD31 immunohistochemistry. Microvessel density was significantly (*p < 0.01) decreased in the infected mice compared to the uninfected mice. Results are representative of two independent experiments. b CECs were assessed by flow cytometry as described in the “Materials and methods”. The mean (±SEM) number of CEC per μL of blood was calculated and compared by one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni post-test. CECs from infected-tumor-bearing mice were not significantly (p > 0.05) different from those of tumor-bearing mice. An increase in CECs was observed in mice only challenged with infections (*p < 0.05), but not significantly compared to tumor only or infected mice with tumors (p > 0.05)
