(a) Overlap between food taxa detected by diet record, stool DNA, or stool protein, separated by kingdom. Note that the FoodSeq assay does not include a marker for fungi, seaweed, or bacteria-derived foods (i.e. xanthan gum), which are shown in the “Other” category. For this analysis, menu data is included from all available records, which in some cases may be up to 4 days from the closest sample. Molecular data is only included from samples with successful molecular detection by both protein- and DNA-based methods, which is why the total number of taxa differs slightly from that in all samples, reported in Table S4. (b) On a per-sample basis, estimates of richness (the number of unique food items recorded or detected) were significantly higher by metaproteomics than for the two other measures.
