Extracellular vesicle formation.

Exosomes are formed as the cellular membrane buds inwards to form early endosomes which will mature into multivesicular bodies (MVBs). If they are not targeted to the lysosome, MVBs will fuse with the plasma membrane releasing their contents (exosomes). Microvesicles (MVs) are formed by outward budding of the cellular membrane and are larger in size relative to exosomes. Created with BioRender.com.
