Figure 1

Heat Map of Studies Investigating Involvement of Main HERV Families with Relevant Diseases and Disorders (DD). The heat map illustrates the number of public available studies (1979-2023) investigating the association between the main HERV families and relevant diseases. Darker colors represent a higher number of published articles, while lighter colors indicate fewer publications. The colors do not necessarily reflect a positive correlation between HERV activity and disease, as studies describing downregulation or absence of correlation were also included in the analysis. Supplementary File 1 include the list of the articles used to build this figure. Data on cancer/HERV published up to October 2023 were retrieved from CancerHERVdb (available at https://erikstricker.shinyapps.io/cancerHERVdb/). footnotes. (*) Diseases with < 10 studies including the Human Endogenous Retroviruses subject. HAND- HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder. COVID-19 - Coronavirus diseases 2019.
