Demyelination induced by recombinant viruses. C57BL/6 mice were inoculated intracerebrally with various doses of wild-type (■), C12 (▵), and recombinant wtR10 (•), wtR1 (▴), 159R36 (□), and 159R40 (○) viruses. Animals surviving the acute infection were sacrificed at 30 days postinfection, and spinal cords were analyzed for demyelination by staining with luxol fast blue as described in the text. Data represent the mean values for 15 mice (5,000-PFU dose), 5 to 15 mice (500-PFU dose), and 5 mice (50-PFU dose).
