Calculated from the highest dilution of lysed cells which yields a detectable PCR product (for example, HIV-1 DNA could be detected by PCR in 40 but not 8 autofluorescent cells from mouse 17; thus, 40 cells must contain at least one provirus, and 1,000 cells must contain at least 25 proviruses).
