Traditional Clinical Classification of Chest Pain

Clinical Classification Clinical Characteristics
Typical Angina (1) Constricting discomfort or pain in the substernal chest or in the neck, jaw, shoulder, or arm.
(2) Precipitated by physical exertion or emotional stress.
(3) Relieved by rest or nitrates within 5 minutes.
Typical angina meets all 3 characteristics.
Atypical Angina Atypical angina meets only 2.
Non-anginal Chest Pain If the pain has none or only 1 of the above characteristics, it is considered non-anginal/ non-cardiac chest symptoms.
