Isolation of B. pertussis from BALs and lung lesions of infected piglets. In each experiment two or three piglets infected with live bacteria were euthanized at different times postinfection. (A) BALs from all animals were collected, titrated, and plated onto BG agar plates to determine the numbers of viable bacteria in the BALs. Each bar indicates the mean for a minimum of eight animals, and the error bar indicates the standard error of the mean. (B) Macroscopically altered tissues were collected from the center of the lesions, weighed, and homogenized. To determine the number of CFU/g tissue, cleared supernatants were plated onto BG agar plates, and viable counts were determined.
