Stromal‐derived factor‐1 (SDF‐1) traps proangiogenic hematopoietic cells (HC). (A) A heterogeneous mixture of cells is recruited from the bone marrow to the peripheral blood in response to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) overexpression in ischemic foci. (B) VEGF overexpression in ischemic foci also induces the expression of SDF‐1 in mural cells (MC) around blood vessels. (C) As a result, recruited bone marrow‐derived circulating cells expressing CXC receptor (CXCR)4, the receptor for SDF‐1, are entrapped and positioned correctly around the vessels expressing SDF‐1. (D) These trapped HC produce proangiogenic cytokines and chemokines, resulting in initiation of sprouting angiogenesis.
