Sirt1 mediates organelle protection. Proximal tubules require high amounts of ATP to reabsorb the necessary substances in the urine. Therefore, proximal tubules contain abundant mitochondria and peroxisomes. Sirt1 reportedly activates mitochondrial and peroxisomal functions.
