The impact of climate change on Fusarium mycotoxin contamination. Temperature, rainfall (or water activity), and carbon dioxide concentration ([CO₂]) are the main known climate drivers affecting Fusarium mycotoxin contamination. Climate factors not only influence the growth and development of crops and Fusarium fungi but also affect the infection process of Fusarium fungi through changes in crop susceptibility, virulence of Fusarium fungi, and environmental factors at critical stages of infection.
