Several ICP27 mutants cause an increase in the length and heterogeneity of the α-globin 3′ poly(A) tail. (A) Total RNA was harvested from HeLa cells infected with the indicated ICP27 mutant viruses in the presence of PAA at 6 h postinfection. The RNA was analyzed for the presence of α-globin transcripts before or after removal of the poly(A) tail by treatment with RNase H and oligo(dT). The α-globin transcript in RNA isolated from blood is shown as a control.
