X-Gal substrate turns blue in the presence of β-galactosidase; the diffuse staining pattern is evidence of widespread recombinant viral expression within the implant. (B) Effect on normal cervical tissue following implantation with 90-day-release 17β-estradiol pellet (1.7 mg). At day 24, the tissue exhibited disorganized structure and an increase in number of stratified nucleated epithelium, consistent with hyperplasia and a metaplastic state.
