After Charing Cross, where he was known as “Red Shawe” (reflecting his hair colour rather than political leaning) David pursued a surgical training, developing expertise in urology and colorectal surgery. He spent six months working in the bush of Western Australia before being appointed as consultant to the Redhill hospital group, where he worked until early retirement from the NHS in 1976. He then ran a private surgical clinic for 11 years, then farmed for almost 20 years in north Devon. David was a keen fisherman and beekeeper. He leaves a wife, Jill; four children; and 10 grandchildren.
