Depletion of EG by RHA1 strains and accumulation of glycolaldehyde. The strains were (A) WT RHA1, (B) the ΔmadA mutant, (C) its complement, (D) RHA1-EG, (E) and WT RHA1 overexpressing aldA2. Strains were grown on 10 mM succinate to stationary phase, at which point EG was added to 20 mM (indicated by the arrow). EG and glycolaldehyde concentrations were measured using HPLC-RI.
