The World Health Organization/ United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) data reflect the drinking water service levels of each area. Only areas with a population density without safely managed drinking water (SMDW) service > 100 km−2 are marked. America, Europe, Saudi Arabia, and Australia are high-income countries (according to the Gross National Income per capita, GNI, see methods for more details), while most parts of central Africa, peninsular India, and the Philippines are still in the developing stage or even in the poverty stage.
