Table 1. Operational definitions of key search terms.

Clinical decision support The system used data from the patient record and gave options for pathway or courses of action recommended to the clinical practitioner. This could have been any type of system from a simple score or checklist to a dynamic algorithm, as long as it gave pathway advice to the clinician.
Routine use Used in regular clinical practice as part of normal workflow. If there was no evidence that the system was not used beyond a research study or trial, then it was excluded.
Clinician facing The CDS was intended to facilitate clinical decision-making, directed at the assessing clinician. Any patient-facing applications were not included.
Patient facing Primarily aimed at patient decision-making around treatment choice.
