Experimental scheme showing two types of culture used (A) in vitro liquid culture and (B) soil condition. Plants were grown in soil (optimal soil mix supplemented with fertilizer once per week) and in in vitro liquid cultures (light intensity 35 µmol m^− 2 s^− 1, 20 °C day/18 °C night, photoperiod 16/8). Leaves and roots were harvested separately. All samples were divided for secondary metabolites extraction and RNA isolation. Plant extracts were divided in half and subsequent UHPLC analysis were performed in methanol extracts with and without enzymatic treatment. cDNA was synthetized for qPCR analysis.
