Confluent monolayers of human HEC-1A or HEp-2 nonpolarized kidney cells growing on Thermanox plastic coverslips were infected with wild-type HSV-1 strain F, F-gEβ, or F-gEΔCT for 16 to 18 h. The cells were then fixed and sectioned perpendicular to the plane of the cell monolayer and plastic. Electron microscopy was used to quantify the numbers of particles on apical, basal, or lateral (cell junctions) surfaces.

b

The data are total numbers of virions counted, and the numbers in parentheses are the average numbers of particles per cell.
