^aApoptosis of monocytes/macrophages is a specific early event that occurs 6 h after administration of PPVO but not of CFA or placebo. The cells were stained with annexin V antibody and analyzed by flow cytometry. The amount of apoptotic cells is indicated as the percentage of each population that was detectable. 

^bP < 0.05 (by the Wilcoxon test) in comparison to the placebo. Other data differ insignificantly from data for the placebo control (PBS).
