ABSTRACT
Background:
Tele-orthodontics, the application of telecommunications technology in orthodontic care, has emerged as a promising tool to enhance patient compliance and facilitate treatment monitoring. In traditional orthodontic practice, patient compliance and monitoring are pivotal but often challenging aspects. Tele-orthodontics offers a solution by providing remote communication and monitoring capabilities, potentially improving patient engagement and treatment outcomes.
Materials and Methods:
This study conducted a retrospective analysis of orthodontic patients who utilized tele-orthodontics as part of their treatment plan. A total of 100 patients were included in the study, with ages ranging from 12 to 40 years old. Patients were provided with mobile applications or web-based platforms enabling them to communicate with their orthodontists, submit progress images, and receive feedback remotely. Treatment compliance was assessed based on adherence to scheduled appointments, wearing of orthodontic appliances, and completion of prescribed exercises.
Results:
The analysis revealed a significant improvement in patient compliance with the implementation of tele-orthodontics. Adherence to scheduled appointments increased by 30%, with patients attending 95% of their appointments compared to 65% before the introduction of tele-orthodontics. Moreover, compliance with wearing orthodontic appliances showed a remarkable rise, with patients consistently wearing their appliances for an average of 22 h per day, up from 14 h per day previously. Additionally, the completion rate of prescribed exercises saw a notable enhancement, with 80% of patients completing their exercises as instructed, compared to 50% previously.
Conclusion:
Tele-orthodontics plays a significant role in enhancing patient compliance and treatment monitoring in orthodontic care. The remote communication and monitoring capabilities provided by tele-orthodontic platforms empower patients to actively participate in their treatment process, leading to improved adherence to appointments, better compliance with wearing orthodontic appliances, and increased completion of prescribed exercises. These findings underscore the importance of integrating tele-orthodontics into orthodontic practice to optimize patient outcomes and satisfaction.

INTRODUCTION
Orthodontic treatment necessitates a high level of patient cooperation and consistent monitoring to achieve desired results, which often involves regular adjustments, appliance wear, and adherence to prescribed instructions.[1] However, conventional orthodontic practice faces inherent challenges in maintaining patient engagement and compliance due to factors such as distance from the orthodontic clinic, time constraints, and communication barriers.[2] These challenges can impede treatment progress and compromise outcomes, highlighting the need for innovative solutions to enhance patient involvement in their orthodontic care.
Tele-orthodontics emerges as a promising solution to address the shortcomings of traditional orthodontic practice by harnessing the power of telecommunications technology.[3] Through tele-orthodontic platforms, orthodontists can remotely interact with patients, provide guidance, monitor progress, and offer timely interventions as needed.[4] By facilitating convenient access to care and enabling real-time communication, tele-orthodontics has the potential to overcome geographical barriers and improve patient engagement throughout the treatment journey.
In this study, we aim to explore the impact of tele-orthodontics on patient compliance and treatment monitoring, recognizing its potential to revolutionize orthodontic care delivery. By examining how tele-orthodontics enhances patient involvement, adherence to treatment protocols, and overall treatment outcomes, we contribute valuable insights to the evolving landscape of orthodontic practice. Additionally, by shedding light on the efficacy and feasibility of tele-orthodontic interventions, we aim to guide future developments and implementations in orthodontic telemedicine, ultimately benefiting both patients and providers alike.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
This retrospective study analyzed orthodontic patients who utilized tele-orthodontics as part of their treatment regimen. The study included a cohort of 100 patients, aged between 12 and 40 years. Patients were selected from a single orthodontic practice and were provided access to tele-orthodontic platforms, either through mobile applications or web-based interfaces. These platforms facilitated remote communication between patients and orthodontists, enabling patients to submit progress images and receive feedback on their treatment remotely.
Data collection included the assessment of patient compliance metrics, such as adherence to scheduled appointments, wearing of orthodontic appliances, and completion of prescribed exercises. Adherence to appointments was measured by comparing the number of attended appointments before and after the implementation of tele-orthodontics. Compliance with wearing orthodontic appliances was assessed by evaluating the average number of hours patients wore their appliances per day. The completion rate of prescribed exercises was determined by the proportion of patients who reported completing their exercises as instructed.
Statistical analysis was conducted using appropriate methods to compare compliance metrics before and after the introduction of tele-orthodontics. Ethical approval was obtained from the institutional review board prior to conducting the study.
RESULTS
The results demonstrate a significant improvement in patient compliance with the introduction of tele-orthodontics. Adherence to scheduled appointments increased from 65% to 95%, with a notable reduction in missed appointments. Patients also showed a substantial increase in compliance with wearing orthodontic appliances, wearing them for an average of 22 h per day compared to 14 h per day previously. Moreover, the completion rate of prescribed exercises saw a marked enhancement, with 80% of patients completing their exercises as instructed, compared to 50% before the implementation of tele-orthodontics. These findings highlight the positive impact of tele-orthodontics on patient engagement and treatment compliance [Tables 1-3].

DISCUSSION
The findings of this study highlight the transformative impact of tele-orthodontics on patient compliance and treatment monitoring within orthodontic care. By leveraging tele-orthodontic platforms, patients demonstrated significant improvements in various facets of engagement and adherence to treatment protocols, leading to enhanced treatment outcomes.
The observed increase in adherence to scheduled appointments echoes previous research on the positive effects of telemedicine interventions on appointment compliance.[1] Tele-orthodontics offers patients remote access to their orthodontists, effectively removing logistical barriers such as travel time and scheduling conflicts. This accessibility fosters regular communication and follow-up appointments, ensuring continuity of care and timely adjustments to treatment plans.
Moreover, the notable enhancement in compliance with wearing orthodontic appliances suggests that tele-orthodontics fosters patient accountability and motivation.[2] By establishing consistent channels for interaction between patients and orthodontists, tele-orthodontic platforms create a sense of connectivity and support throughout the treatment process. This increased engagement encourages patients to adhere more closely to wearing their appliances as prescribed, ultimately contributing to treatment efficacy and efficiency.
Additionally, the significant improvement in the completion rate of prescribed exercises underscores the educational value of tele-orthodontics in empowering patients to manage aspects of their treatment independently.[3] Through remote communication tools, orthodontists can deliver detailed instructions and personalized guidance to patients, facilitating proper technique and adherence to prescribed exercises. This enhanced level of patient education promotes self-management and empowers patients to take an active role in their orthodontic care.
Despite the evident benefits of tele-orthodontics, its implementation may encounter challenges related to technological literacy, privacy concerns, and access to reliable internet connectivity.[4] Addressing these barriers is essential to ensuring equitable access to tele-orthodontic services and maximizing its potential to improve patient outcomes.[5,6,7,8] Future studies should explore innovative strategies to mitigate these challenges and optimize the delivery of tele-orthodontic care to a diverse patient population, thereby advancing the field of orthodontics towards more patient-centered and accessible care models.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, tele-orthodontics represents a valuable tool for improving patient compliance and treatment monitoring in orthodontic care. By leveraging telecommunications technology, tele-orthodontic platforms empower patients to actively participate in their treatment process, leading to better outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.
