Apoptosis of sham-exposed (open bar), heat-inactivated virus-exposed (hatched bar), and virus-exposed (solid bars) CD3+ lymphocytes. MNL were exposed to influenza A virus strains A/AA/Marton/43 (H1N1), heat-inactivated A/AA/Marton/43, wild-type A/Bethesda/85 (H3N2) (termed wt A/Bethesda), or cold-adapted A/Ann Arbor/6/60 × A/Bethesda/85 (termed ca A/Bethesda) for 24 h. Results represent the mean percentage of apoptotic cells ± SD from five experiments. For each sample, data from 10,000 CD3+ cells were collected.
