By simply changing the strength of the mutual inhibition between WA and SA neuron populations, we can change the mean bout length. Increasing mutual inhibitory synaptic strength increases both the mean wake and sleep bout lengths, and decreasing the mutual inhibitory synaptic strength decreases both the mean wake and sleep bout lengths.
