Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease Meets the following criteria:
  • 1.

    ALT levels >20 U/L in women or >30 U/L in men

  • 2.

    Has metabolic syndrome (with the exclusion of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or alcoholism)

Excessive alcohol consumption Meets at least one of the following criteria:
  • 1.

    Underage drinking: any alcohol use under the age of 21

  • 2.

    Heavy drinking: 15 or more drinksa per week for men and 8 or more drinks per week for women

  • 3.

    Binge drinking: 5 or more drinks on one occasion for men and 4 or more drinks on one occasion for women

  • 4.

    Pregnant drinking: any alcohol consumed by pregnant women
