(i) SGLT2i blocks SGLT2 on the apical surface of the epithelial cell, which increases renal glucose excretion. The resulting glucosuria stimulates GLUT9 to reabsorb glucose in exchange for uric acid excretion. (ii) Elevated glucosuria suppresses uric acid reabsorption by uric acid reabsorption transporter 1 (URAT1) in the proximal tubule and GLUT9 in the collecting duct.
