Types of prolonged fasting. Water-only fasting generally involves consuming 2–3 L of mineral water or distilled water per day, with no food intake. The Buchinger fasting program involves consuming 250 mL of fruit or vegetable juice as a lunch and 250 mL of vegetable soup as a dinner, leading to an average total calorie intake of 200–300 kcal and 25–35 g of carbohydrates per day.
