Diagram of a submitochondrial particle (SMP). A SMP is an inside-out vesicle of the inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM). It retains all the respiratory chain (RC) components, and the inversion of the IMM exposes CI and CII to the medium, allowing unrestricted access to oxidation substrates, including NADH, which could not pass through the IMM.
