Gene expression and activity of glycocalyx‐degrading enzymes in lungs. Real‐time RT PCR was performed to determine the baseline mRNA expression levels of (a) matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) 2 and (b) MMP14 in lung tissue of WT and HPSE −/− mice. (c) HPSE activity and (d) MMP14 activity were determined in the lung tissue after I/R injury and in uninjured tissue and was normalized to the normal plasma level in each genotype WT or HPSE −/− to calculate the fold change.
