Comparison of warped D99 and the direct MAP-based segmentations with two histological stains in a matched brain region. Boundaries between cortical areas were delineated manually using only the histological images (E and F, yellow and black lines). Discontinuities in the laminar patterns of the MAP-based segmentation (C) correspond well with those observed in the PV (E) and SMI-32 (F) matched histological slices, providing a more accurate estimation of areal boundaries than the warping-based segmentation (D); e.g., the borders between areas 7op and 7b(PFG), LIPd and 7a(PG), A1 and CL, CL and Tpt, among others. In regions with high cortical curvature, all three methods showed good agreement; e.g., borders between areas 1–2 and 23c, 5(PE) and 5(PEa).
